For decades, Evans Springs Baptist Church served as the center of a vibrant rural community. Over time, however, membership gradually declined as residents left Evans Springs for other destinations. Despite the declining population, services continued at the church until 2016, when the congregation experienced a series of setbacks. A tree fell on the church roof during a storm, and the pastor suffered a heart attack. Services subsequently ceased.
In 2017, Anderson County revoked the church's tax-exempt status, and the property was placed on the tax rolls. In 2019, the County foreclosed on the property, which was scheduled to be auctioned on September 1, 2019. Recognizing the historical and cultural importance of the church and the Evans Springs community, a group of individuals came together to prevent its loss. They raised funds to pay the back taxes and began efforts to preserve and restore the church. In 2020, the Evans Springs Historical Society was established as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization to continue this work.
